How do Mega Man and Proto Man differ in Dual Override?
Mega Man: Dual Override offers two playable heroes: Mega Man and Proto Man. Capcom describes the “Dual” in the title as referring to these two leads. Mega Man keeps the classic long-range toolkit built around the Mega Buster and Special Weapons taken from Robot Masters. Proto Man is built for close quarters: the Proto Buster, Proto Shield, and Shield Actions triggered with button combinations, plus heat and overheat you must manage. Each hero has its own progression path. PlayStation Blog describes players “selecting between” the two, and IGN Southeast Asia reported that you choose at the start of a playthrough and stay with that hero for the entire run.

What does the official comparison look like?
The table below uses only Capcom announcements and documented hands-on reports. It does not rank which hero is stronger.
| Aspect | Mega Man | Proto Man |
|---|---|---|
| Primary weapon | Mega Buster | Proto Buster (Capcom notes high close-range damage) |
| Robot Master rewards | Special Weapons copied from defeated Robot Masters; uses weapon energy | Does not copy Robot Master weapons; boss clears unlock shield-focused attacks |
| Defensive / mobility tools | Special Weapons | Proto Shield plus Shield Actions (combo inputs); multiple actions can be used together |
| Custom Chips | Can equip them (50+ chips) | Can equip them (same system) |
| Override | Yes; see Override | Yes; Capcom shows his Override transformation in the latest trailer |
| Resource pressure | Post-Override strain per official materials | Shield Action overuse builds heat; overheating requires managing “temperature” (official site and PS Blog), plus post-Override strain |
| Range focus | Ranged Buster and copied weapons | Close-range and shield techniques |
| Progression | Separate growth path (PS Blog, 2026-09-16) | Separate growth path |
| Run structure | Choose at start; no mid-run swap (IGN SEA hands-on, 2026-09-19) | Same |
| Multiplayer | Steam: Single-player only; co-op not announced | Same |
What did hands-on coverage show for Proto Man?
Justin Koreis reported that Proto Man’s charged shot behaves as a half-circle slash rather than a straight Mega Buster charge. His shield can be thrown like a looping boomerang and is raised during jumps, and the demo had two unlocked attacks, a leaping uppercut and a horizontal dive. Overheat can recover over time or be vented manually. Koreis also noted visible battle damage on Proto Man and some enemies as health drops.

Mega Man: Dual Override — 2nd Trailer (Proto Man gameplay)

Proto Man was shown as playable in the Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live trailer (2026-08-25); the earlier reveal at The Game Awards 2025 only hinted at him via a whistle at the end of the teaser.
Which hero should you pick? (Editorial — not official)
This section is wiki editorial, not Capcom guidance. Capcom has not published balance data or difficulty ratings per hero. It is not possible to rank Mega Man versus Proto Man on power before release. If you want the classic Special Weapon loop and ranged focus, Mega Man matches Capcom’s official description. If you prefer shield combos, heat management, and close-range combat, Proto Man’s official pitch aligns with that style. For controls and demo availability, see our demo and events guide. Twinkle Girl appears in show-floor routes such as the one covered in hands-on previews (Twinkle Girl boss page).
